In 2021 professor Danny Han of ZUYD Hogeschool commissioned us to design and implement a functional research space for the Future of Food research group.
The objective was to transform a standard laboratory kitchen into a versatile environment capable of hosting complex sensory experiences.
The academic environment required a space that could function simultaneously as a professional kitchen and an immersive theatre.
The facility needed to be intuitive enough for students and lecturers to operate without constant technical supervision, yet powerful enough to support high-end audiovisual research.
The primary goal of the Food Experience Lab is to study how environmental factors influence the perception of taste and dining.
By manipulating visuals, lighting and climate, researchers can observe how diners respond to different atmospheres.
We designed the system to ensure that the technology supports the dining experience rather than distracting from it.
Students act as both creators and participants, building their own immersive content to test new hospitality concepts.
Our team provided a comprehensive technical and creative framework for the space, situated within the ZUYD campus.
270-degree projection system spanning from floor to ceiling.
Integrated table projection, calibrated to map content precisely onto dining settings and plates.
Custom video control system that allows non-technical users to upload and trigger new immersive scenes.
Interactive lighting infrastructure linked to the visual environment.
Dedicated presentation interface for external laptops.
Climate control integration to adjust room temperature in sync with specific scenes.
Development of a foundational library of dozens of audiovisual scenes and an opening show sequence.
We continue to serve as a partner for the development and expansion of the lab’s capabilities.
We contribute to ZUYD’s ongoing research into immersive experiences, which is of great value to our professional development.
