utrechtse blauwe - ar coaster

beer coaster design with augmented reality

For the launch of the Utrechtse Blauwe NEIPA, we worked with our neighbours at Brouwerij Hommeles to create an augmented reality (AR) beer coaster.

For the launch of the Utrechtse Blauwe NEIPA, we worked with our neighbours at Brouwerij Hommeles to create an augmented reality (AR) beer coaster.

The beer itself is a collaboration between the brewery and Joris Hellevoort from Stichting Het Utrechts Landschap. It is brewed with emmer wheat, and we felt the digital addition should reflect that local connection.

We designed a 3D animation that appears when the coaster is scanned. A white deer moves through a blue landscape, which is a direct interpretation of the artwork on the beer label.

Users can rotate the phone to see the design from different sides.
It is a small addition, but it gives people something to look at while enjoying their drink.

Our studio shares the grounds of Fort Honswijk with the brewery.
Martine and Jos, the people behind Hommeles, are friends of ours and it was natural and fun for us to support the release of this beer.
Since Jos retired in 2026, Martine has taken over, and we continue to share the space and love for craft beer.

The technology behind this is the same we use for the art route we installed at the fort and the interactive beer labels we made for VONK 2025 (also Hommeles).

As a team of two, we prefer these kinds of local projects where we can use our tools to help people we know and work alongside.
